Fonseco Porto, Portugal
Fonseca belongs in the first league of Vintage Port houses. Few producers have maintained such consistency of quality and style from vintage to vintage.
From the legendary 1840 release, Fonseca’s first Vintage Port, to the superb declared vintages of the past decade, the house has produced a succession of highly acclaimed wines, even during the most adverse periods of history.
James Suckling, in his authoritative book on Vintage Port, remarked: “The Vintage Ports of Fonseca are perhaps the most consistently great of them all. Not only do they have a striking fleshiness and powerful richness when young, but they retain that youthfulness for decades.”
This remarkable consistency derives not only from ongoing family involvement, with knowledge and skill passed down through generations, but also from a deep connection to the vineyard. Fonseca’s three estates – Cruzeiro, Panascal, and Santo António – lie at the heart of the distinctive character of its Vintage Ports.
Fonseca’s respect for the vineyard and the unique environment of the Douro Valley is reflected in its pioneering role in sustainable and organic viticulture. It was the first Port house to offer a wine made entirely from organically produced grapes.
