Calmel & Joseph, Languedoc

Domaine Calmel & Joseph is an ancient Languedoc farmhouse, first recorded in a property deed on 26 July 1577 in the name of Noble Jehan de Calmès, Lord of Saint Jullia. Over the centuries, the farmhouse has been known by several names, including Borde Neuve and La Madone. In 1590, the village of Montirat was pillaged, burned, and completely destroyed. Borde Nove was most likely badly damaged during this time. It was only with the compoix of 1595 (the cadastral and tax register), established after peace was restored, that agricultural activity resumed. The estate was a classic farm of the period, covering around fifteen hectares. Cereals such as wheat, oats, barley, rye, and lentils were cultivated, alongside olive groves. Livestock was reared for wool, and wood was also produced. Vines first appeared on the estate in the 16th century, though they were planted only for the family’s own needs.
